An SEO Extension — Marketers today need to know where their company’s online properties rank compared to the competition, and they need this information daily. 2. Image Capture — Online marketers today are constantly creating reports, presentations and online content. Having an extension in your browser to easily allow you to take custom screenshots is a huge time saver. Some of the best extensions for this task are Aviary and ScreenGrab.

3. URL Shortening — Shortened URLs are becoming an increasingly popular (and much more efficient) way to share content on social networks. If you use Twitter, you likely see hundreds of shortened URLs every day. As a marketer, having browser extensions can make it easier to deal with shortened URLs. While it doesn’t help you shorten URLs, the Bit.ly Preview extension can save you a lot of time because it displays the “long” URL for any bit.ly link that you hover over on the web. This can help protect you from spammers and stop you from clicking on an article that you may have already read. Shorten URL is an extension that makes it easy to shrink a URL with your favorite URL shortening service such as bit.ly or TinyURL.

4. Twitter Sharing — While Twitter desktop clients like TweetDeck and Tweetie are great, sometimes it is simply easier to share interesting information right from your browser. TinyTweet lets users simply highlight text on a web page and share it through Twitter. If you use Twitter through its web interface at Twitter.com, then you may want to consider installing Power Twitter, which adds a ton of features to the traditional Twitter web interface.

5. Blogging Tools — Marketers are becoming publishers. As bloggers, marketers need extensions that can help save time while creating content. For example, Zemanta’s extension recommends content based on the current article you are writing, making it easy to find interesting articles to link to in your blog posts.  Another extension, Apture, makes it easy for bloggers to include and embed media in their blog posts, helping to make stories more visual. Lots of other blogging related extensions exist, and I would encourage you to search the Firefox extension site.

6. Online Video — Regardless of industry, online video has become an important piece of media. Have you ever wanted to add a video from YouTube to a presentation but knew you weren’t going to have access to the internet for that meeting? One Click YouTube Download is an extension that allows you to download any YouTube video to your computer, which is great if you want to embed a video in a PowerPoint. Pixelpipe helps solve the other side of the problem: video uploading. Instead of visiting a bunch of different sites to upload your video, this browser extension allows you to easily upload to multiple sites with only one upload.

7. News Reading — Do you use an RSS reader to read articles from blogs and websites? The problem with RSS is that most readers are ugly. Feedly is a Firefox extension that turns articles from Google Reader, Twitter, YouTube and other sources into an attractive, magazine style layout for easy browsing and consumption. Making information easier to find and read means you can streamline your information consumption and maybe gain a few minutes back in your day.

8. Social Sharing — Sharing content online across social networks is an important part of displaying thought leadership and building an online community. Sometimes content should be shared across more than one network. For this problem, I recommend using Amplify as a simple way to automatically post shared content to Twitter, Facebook, Ping.fm, Posterous, Tumblr and other sites. Another interesting extension that is similar to Amplify is Pearltrees, but it takes a different approach to sharing.

9. Password Management — How much time have you wasted in the past because you forgot a password? Today, marketers have too many usernames and passwords for a variety of online services and accounts. Xmarks is a Firefox add-on that helps users keep bookmarks, passwords and open tabs backed up and synchronized across computers and browsers. This type of syncing is especially important for marketers who use multiple computers.

10. Bookmarking — Saving important and useful links for future use is a popular activity for marketers. While social bookmarking site Delicious may be the most popular, many other options exist for saving bookmarks on the web for access from multiple devices. Other good social bookmarking extensions include Read It Later and GMarks.

Image Zoom

Choose the size you want to re-size an image to or reset auto scroll so you can use the scroll wheel on your mouse to zoom in and out on an image to check quality.

Picnik

This add-on will allow you to save an image of the page you are on and send it directly to the online image editor, Picnik.

Pixlr

You can edit and open images or screengrabs you’ve taken directly in the Pixlr online image editor.

Screengrab

You can grab the entire scrollable document, just the visible bit, or a draggable selection. Screengrab will even save just the contents of an individual frame as well as taking images of Flash and JavaScript elements.

Talon

Talon is an add-on by the popular Aviary.com that allows you to take screenshots that can be saved to your system, opened directly in the online Phoenix image editor, hosted on their site or copied it to the clipboard.

Font Finder

Simply highlight a single element (e.g. a paragraph or a strong tag ), right-click and select `Font Finder`, then marvel as the full CSS text styling of the selected element appears.

View Dependencies

View Dependencies adds a tab to the “page info” so you can see a break down of all of the files associated with the page you just loaded along with their sizes. This can be a handy tool for determining what may be slowing down the load time.

Web Developer

Despite the name, Web Developer has many useful features for designers such as inspect, edit and disable CSS, as well as graphics.  You can also use it to measure elements, re-size the browser, display CSS by media type and more.

Window Resizer

The Browser Window Resizer is useful for testing different screen sizes. It accurately resizes your browser so you can test to see what a web page looks like in all of the standard resolution sizes.

Supports the 640×480, 800×600, 1024×768, 1280×800, 1280×1024, 1600×1200 resolutions.
Resize the current page via the Context menu, Tool menu or Toolbar button.

ColorSuckr will pick the 12 most common colors out of an image and allow you to build a palette out of them.

This Add-on allows you to right-click any image on the web and extract the 12 most common colors from it. You can then build color schemes from the results as well as many other features on the ColorSuckr website.

ColorZilla

With ColorZilla you can get a color reading from any point in your browser, quickly adjust this color and paste it into another program. You can Zoom the page you are viewing and measure distances between any two points on the page.

The built-in palette browser allows choosing colors from pre-defined color sets and saving the most used colors in custom palettes. DOM spying features allow getting various information about DOM elements quickly and easily.

FirePalette

FirePalette provides the color picker to Firebug’s CSS panel, and a menu item “Pick xxx color …” to the context menu of color value (#112233, black, rgb(0, 12, 34)) in CSS panel.

It also works correctly with the color that is a part of mixed CSS values, like “background: #FF8800 none repeat scroll 0 0″, “border: 1px solid black”.

Palette Grabber

Creates a color palette for Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, GIMP, Flash, Fireworks, Paint.NET, or OS X based on the current page.

Glims is the pinnacle of Safari plugins, adding a whole Swiss Army knife of features to your browser. Glims does tabs really well, letting you open links in a new tab instead of a new window, and choose whether new tabs open on the left or the right. It restores tabs from previous sessions.

It adds thumbnails to Google and Yahoo! search results. It lets you change search engines, and adds configurable search suggestions. And, as if that weren’t enough for one plugin, It also allows you to enable full screen mode. You can adjust all of these features in the preferences, so don’t skip Glims just because it sounds like more than you need.

Saft

Saft is a direct Glims competitor, offering a slightly different (and a bit more extensive) set of features. The two plugins tend to conflict, so take a look at what both have to offer before you decide which one to install. It’s also worth noting that the full version of Saft costs $12.

GreaseKit

If you’ve used Firefox, you might be familiar with Greasemonkey, a plugin that lets you run site-specific userscripts to add features to (or remove annoyances from) your favorite sites. Greasekit is the Safari equivalent, and most of the scripts you love in Greasemonkey will also work properly in Greasekit. Here are 10 of my favorites to get you started.

Safari AdBlock

With PithHelmet lingering and not yet updated for Safari 4, your best bet to block ads is Safari AdBlock. It’s a simple install, and it works well with very little configuration.

PDF Browser Plugin

If you prefer to view PDFs within the browser, this is the plugin to grab. It works in Firefox, too, so this is one area where Safari gets equal plugin treatment. PDF Browser Plugin also makes it easy to download PDF files, in case you decide you want to view them offline after all.

DeliciousSafari

For serious Delicious users, a good plugin for the service is crucial. DeliciousSafari handles the complete Delicious experience, from creating bookmarks to tagging and organizing. It adds a “Delicious” menu to Safari, and you can manage everything about your Delicious account from there. The full version of DeliciousSafari comes with a $10 pricetag.

SafariStand

SafariStand is another multi-purpose plugin, and its best feature is a sidebar with thumbnails of all your open tabs. If you’ve seen the OmniWeb or Shiira browsers, you might recognize this feature. SafariStand also does other neat tricks like color labels for bookmarks, and saving and restoring your current tabs as “workspaces.” One caveat: SafariStand is Mac-only.

ClickToFlash

ClickToFlash is billed as “your web browsing prophylactic,” and that sounds about right. It hides Flash content until you click on it, which blocks out annoying advertisements, autoplaying videos, and other web hazards. If you regularly visit specific sites with Flash content you want to see, you can whitelist them to avoid any problems.

Inquisitor

Inquisitor adds instant search to Safari’s search field, displaying a handful of results in just a second. It’s a great time-saver, because it often allows you to skip over the Google results page entirely, and go directly to the site you’re looking for.

Safari140

Twitter addicts take note: Safari140 is an extension that lets you tweet from any webpage. It auto-shortens URLs, and auto-fills with a link to the current site. Safari140 posts directly to Twitter, with no need to go through the Twitter web interface. It’s also integrated into the Newsfire RSS reader, which is a project by the same developer.
