RSS FeedIf you don’t have an RSS feed you are missing an extremely valuable tool. The RSS feed is another form of viral marketing as mentioned in part 1 of this series. Visitors to your site can subscribe to this feed and will receive updates as you add content to your blog. I personally use Feedburner provided by Google and there is a WordPress plugin for that. You will have to get an account with Google and then setting up the feed is mostly automatic. You will be able to have Google add Adsense to your feed earning you some extra money. This will provide further interaction.

Newsletter SubscriptionA newsletter can be set up to send the subscribers an email each time you add new content to your website. Unlike the RSS Feed you can send your subscribers a newsletter at will. This was you can send them information that is not posted on your website and can post information on your blog that will not be sent to the subscribers. A well ordered newsletter that is enjoyable and informative and not just sales pitches, one after another will build relationships built on trust and respect and will be worth it’s weight in gold for years to come. Therefore, a newsletter is a part of the most interactive blogs.

Recent Posts and CommentsOne the WordPress dashboard in the widgets section there are recent comments and recent posts and placing these on your sidebars will create fantastic on page navigation for your visitors. If they come to your site through an article on “Cleaning your dog’s teeth” and they see another recent post on “How to groom your dog and not get bit” they are likely to continue browsing your site. Recent comments can also catch their eye and lead them to read more and meander around your site stumbling over more and yet greater information.

Related PostsThere is a WordPress plugin for this option and it will pull posts that are related by tags into a list like the recent posts. I know that I would like to link to all the other relevant posts from one so that people can keep reading, learning and growing. This plugin takes care of that for you by pulling all related content into a list for the visitor. I just love it when you can automate all these great systems to help your readers.

Comment RatingThis is yet another WordPress plugin that will put a little green thumbs up hand and a little red thumbs down hand on your comments. This will allow people to simply click the green or red hand to applaud or deject a comment left by another. People just love to comment on other people’s comments, don’t they? This is a great asset to making your blog one of the most interactive blogs.

CommunityThere is a WordPress plugin for joining a kind of site community. I tried this and honestly I did not like it but I am sure it is very appropriate for someone’s blog. People do love to feel like they are part of a private club.

ForumIf you are real serious about a particular topic and plan to be very focused you may want to consider adding a forum to your blog. This can draw lots of traffic and become a place where people will come to share and grow together. These can become like little communities and I am part of forums where we know each other and it is a great experience. Both communities and forums will creative interactive blogs.

Surveys/PollsLike I said previously, people like to comment and be heard. You can create an enjoyable and profitable exercise for people to do with surveys and/or polls. If you had a site that was heavily involved in Mac products now would be the perfect time to take a poll about the new Ipad. In a few weeks you could take a survey from the people that bought the Ipad and see how they liked it. This is another value tool to make your blog one of the most interactive blogs.

If you are blogging for profit, whether as an amateur or professional, then you are best advised to run your blog from your own website. This however is a personal opinion, and many people prefer the simplicity of operating their blog from a blog host such as Blogger, run from Blogspot, or WordPress from WordPress.com. There is little to do other than to register and make your posts. The only negative is a lack of individuality and formatting of the look of the blog and the tools that you can use on it.
The majority of people who use the internet for fun, as opposed to business, believe that they have few opportunities to make money from their blog. Their blog is to communicate with others, and to express their views online in a way that was not possible prior to around the turn of the millennium. Sure, blogs were in existence before then, but mainly in specialized applications, and it was sometime between 1998 and 2001 that blogging changed from personal diaries of internet ‘experts’ to what we now regard blogging as being.
However, anyone who has a blog (reminds me of a Cilla Black song) can use it to make money, or if that is against your ethos of using the internet for fun, then to ‘cover your expenses’ as our councillors, governors and other governmental individuals like to express it! As they do, you can cover your expenses very, very well if you utilize the monetization possibilities of blogs as they can be used.
To repeat, in order to do so to the maximum of your ability, you must run your blog from your own web host. Most amateur blogs are created using Blogger from the Blogspot site or WordPress from WordPress.com, but if you can run your blog from your own website, then you have a lot more flexibility in the content of your blog than otherwise.
In fact you get many more benefits other than the possibility of profit by uploading blogging software to your web space (I am now going to use the term ‘website’ for web space since that is more familiar to most people, though the terms mean different things). If your blogging software is to your own website rather than that that of a blog provider such as Blogger or WordPress, you have a lot more flexibility in how you want to format your blog, and in the features contained within it.
Let’s look at what you get if you upload WordPress, for example, to your own website. In order to do so you must have control over a MySQL database, that most good web hosts provide, and know how to use an ftp program. Otherwise it is plain sailing to upload the software. What you get is the ability to edit the CSS and HTML that determine the content and appearance of your blog posts, your sidebars, headers and footers. An immediate obvious benefit of this is the ability to add Adsense blocks that bring income to your blog.
Another is the possibility of adding links to any affiliate products you are promoting, and in fact links to anything you want your visitors to link to. These could include your websites or other blogs, in addition to adverts of various kinds. You can offer these in permanent pages, at the start or end of each individual post, or even within posts, though the most effective adverts and Adsense blocks are those included in the sidebars and footers of each post.
Another significant benefit that many bloggers find they get by downloading the software is that they can upload any of thousands of page templates for their blog that are totally editable. It is the ideal medium to advertise your product or service, and make money while you sleep or when you are on vacation. Imagine waking up in the morning, checking your bank balance, and finding a lot more there than when you went to bed!
That is blogging for profit, and it is not difficult. Amateur blogs can be used for profit as well as the professional blogs. There is no distinction if you are hosting your own blog. You can make money 24/7 while you sleep, and your widgets can also include an opt-in form that builds up your email list from those that are interested in your product or niche, but not quite ready to purchase. Keep in touch with them while you sell to others.
That is one great benefit of blogging.

When most bloggers and website owners think of links, they naturally consider links to their home page first. After all, the blog or website home page is the most obvious and visible page to be on the receiving end of an inbound link. Too often, the very important links to internal pages are forgotten, and get lost in the shuffle. Their latent SEO power is let go to waste. A bit of link planning can turn that lost SEO strength into higher search engine rankings. Blogs in particular receive an abundance of incoming links to internal blog pages. Think of every time that someone linked directly to one of your blog posts. As that page moves into the blog archives, that internal inbound link remains alive, and providing link popularity to power to that page in particular; as well as the entire blog in general. Incoming link power is spread through the entire blog, as the pages are interlinked, helping all of the pages rank well, to some degree. It’s thought that the search engines, including Google, Yahoo, and MSN Search place varying, but high degrees of importance on internal site links. It seems logical that search engines would credit internal posts and articles, as links to internal pages are a strong indicator of valuable and important site or blog content. Of course, you may want to rank for those phrases for reasons unknown and entirely bewildering. In that case, use “click here” if you so desire.  Bloggers often use very powerful link anchor text, often without concern for the resulting SEO benefits, to describe the receiving post. Bloggers are usually more concerned with sharing information and interesting blog posts, and less with search engine rrankings. With that keyword rich link anchor text in place, the inbound link packs much more search engine punch. When linking to your own archived blog posts, be sure to use descriptive wording, relevant to the post receiving the link.
