Easy Web Site Design Tips – How to Simply Create a Targeted Landing Page With WordPress

When working with the WordPress blog a new content is created easily – it is like creating a simple Word document. You can add your formatting, fonts, tables, etc. It is easy because WordPress is designed to manage content simply. Your new page or post in a blog is nicely put inside a WordPress theme, with all the graphics.

However, from time to time we need to create a simple landing page, without WordPress features like a header, footer, sidebar, etc. It is when we need to create a simple landing page, or squeeze page to capture leads, or create a landing page for our PPC AdWords campaign.

In this situation, we need a simple, clean landing page with one purpose only – to get a lead or a sale.

In this case, the standard WordPress blog page is not sufficient, because it usually provides a lot of distractions for users. There are many other links the users can click, thus not having one “line of thought” in front of their eyes. In this case, you can use a WordPress custom page template.

WordPress custom page template is not very well known, yet powerful WordPress feature. It allows you to integrate any web page into your site with no problems. You can basically make any WordPress page look exactly as you want. You can use any.html file as a template. Simply design your desired squeeze page and use it as a template for your blog page.

Some WordPress themes even provide these simple page templates. They have an additional page template for this purpose. This page template has no sidebars, headers, anything. You can design your landing page as you wish, simply by adding a new WordPress page.

When editing or creating a new WordPress page the page template can be changed easily. Look at the right sidebar – there is a “Template” combo box. Here you can select a “Default Template” or a template without sidebars for a landing page (if supported by the current WordPress theme). When editing a WordPress page using ‘clean’ page template, remember that you have to add headers and footers manually where needed.

Remember to add links from this new page to your home blog page, as well as important links to your privacy policy or contact pages, etc.

If the WordPress theme doesn’t have the page template usable for the squeeze page, you can easily create your own page template. However, do not change the current theme manually. Just use the WordPress custom page template. The custom page template is just any regular HTML file, which extension is changed to.php and the template header is inserted at the beginning of the page.

The header is simply this piece of code (change your template name):

Template Name: Your Template Name

This php file is then uploaded to the current theme directory (e.g. “/wp-content/themes/default/”).

Note, that this page can be used only with the theme where it was uploaded. If you want to use it with another theme, you must upload this page to that theme directory.
