Screenr – Create screencasts and screen recordings the easy way

What is Screenr?

Screenr is a web-based tool that lets you create screencasts without installing any software. You just click the record button and your screen activity is recorded along with narration from your microphone. Screenr then publishes your screencast in high-definition Flash format. Screenr makes it easy to share your screencast on Twitter, YouTube or anywhere else on the web. Even iPhone users can view your screencast.

Do I need a Twitter account to use Screenr?
Yes, you need a Twitter ID to log in to Screenr to record screencasts or comment on them.

Can anyone view my screencasts?
Yes, all screencasts are public.

What capture size should I pick for recording my screencasts?
Generally, the smaller, the better. A smaller capture resolution means faster publishing and faster playback for your viewers. It also makes your recording sharper for viewers who don’t have as high a screen resolution as you do.

What’s the maximum capture size?
Smaller capture sizes are usually best (see previous question). But you can record any size you want up to 2560×1600 on a PC and 1920×1200 on a Mac.

Are there keyboard shortcuts for using Screenr?
Yes! When recording, pause and resume recording with ALT+D on Windows and Option+D on Mac. When playing a screencast, click on the screencast with your mouse first and then use these keyboard shortcuts:.

  • Spacebar – toggle play/pause
  • Left arrow – rewind 10%
  • Right arrow – forward 10%
  • Up arrow – increase volume
  • Down arrow – decrease volume
  • Z – Zoom full screen

I see black bars on the sides when my screencast is embedded in the player. How do I avoid the black bars?
The embedded player size uses the high-definition aspect ratio of 16:9. If you record with a 16:9 ratio, you won’t have black bars. So pick one of the preset HD sizes of 854×480 or 1280×720. You can also select one of these two presets and shift-drag the corner of the recording frame. This will lock the aspect ratio but allow you to select a resolution.

I have two displays. Can I record the secondary display?
Currently, Screenr records only your primary display. Make sure anything you want to record is on your primary display.

What are the system requirements for Screenr?
You need Mac (OSX 10.4 and up) or Windows (XP, Vista or Windows 7). Most common browsers are supported, including IE 6, 7, and 8; Firefox 3+; Safari 3+; and Google Chrome. You need the Java 1.5 runtime or later for recording and the Flash Player 9 (release 115 or later) or Flash Player 10 for playing screencasts.

How much does Screenr cost and is there a limit to the number of screencasts I can create?
Screenr is free. Go nuts!
