What is OCR?
Free-OCR.com is a free online OCR (Optical Character Recognition) tool. You can use this to perform OCR on any image you supply.
This service is free, no registration necessary. We also do not need your email address.
Just upload your image files. Free-OCR takes either PDF, JPG, GIF, TIFF or BMP format.
The only restriction is that the images must not be larger than 2MB, no wider or higher than 5000 pixels and there is a limit of 10 image uploads per hour.
Do I have to optimize my images before I upload them?
We do automatic image preprocessing optimizaton before the image is feeded to the OCR engine. We reduce background noise and adjust the resolution. The only thing left is a to deskew the image. At the moment we are working on that, but for the time being we suggest, that you manually deskew (if necessary at all) your images.
Does it recognize formatting and layout of documents?
Not at the moment. Currently the OCR process takes for example a two column layout as one text block. But in the future we will integrate a layout engine to enable text recognition for documents with complex layouts.
Does it preserves formatting and layout of documents?
No. The result is always plain text.
Can I OCR screen shoots?
Our OCR engine requires images at a resolution of 150 dpi or greater and as such it is not optimal suited for reading PC screen shots which are only 72dpi. But as we process your uploaded image for better accuracy it might be possible to OCR even screen shots. just give it a try.
